Editor's Note
Heraclea was a town in ancient Aeolis, situated directly opposite the Hecatonnesi (the Ayvalık Islands). This town and its neighbour Coryphantis were called villages of the Mytileneans; in the Roman period it may also have borne names such as Elateia, Idale or Itale. The site lies today on the hill south of the Gazi Kemal Paşa quarter in the Ayvalık district of Balıkesir.
