Perinthus, also known as Heraclea, was a great and flourishing town of ancient Thrace situated on the Propontis, at modern Marmara Ereğlisi. Built like an amphitheatre on the slope of a hill on a small peninsula, it was renamed Heraclea in the Byzantine period.
