Editor's Note
The Roman Theatre of İznik (Nicaea), in Bursa Province, was built in the 2nd century AD during the reign of Emperor Trajan by Pliny the Younger, then governor of Bithynia. Because it was erected on flat ground and raised on vaults, it is regarded as architecturally unique in Turkey; it measured about 84 by 63 metres and could hold roughly ten thousand spectators. Used for two centuries for gladiatorial combats and games, much of its seating section and the tunnel through which animals were released into the arena still survive. During the Empire of Nicaea, founded after the Latin occupation of Constantinople, soldiers killed in battle were found to have been buried in the theatre's vaults.
