Editor's Note
Edessa was an ancient city in Upper Mesopotamia, founded in the Hellenistic period by Seleucus I Nicator, founder of the Seleucid Empire. It became the capital of the Kingdom of Osroene and later of the Roman province of Osroene. In Late Antiquity it was a leading center of Christian learning and home to the Catechetical School of Edessa, and during the Crusades it was the capital of the County of Edessa.
