Located in the historic center of Uskudar, the Museum of the Imperial Ladies presents the rich heritage of the women's world of the Ottoman court. It displays elegant furniture, embroidered garments, precious jewelry, and mother-of-pearl-inlaid mirrors that speak to the lives of the sultans' consorts, the valide sultans, and the imperial favorites who lived behind the veiled walls of the harem. This collection from the 16th to 18th centuries includes the finest examples of handicraft, such as copies of the Quran, works of calligraphy, and silk weavings. Among the special pieces that draw attention are toiletry items, mother-of-pearl-inlaid spinning wheels adorned with fine detail that reveal the beauty rituals of the Ottoman period, and writing instruments. These works attest to the level of education, aesthetic taste, and artistic talent of the women of the Ottoman upper class. After your visit, gazing out from the museum garden onto the blue waters of the Bosphorus and reflecting on the ladies who once lived on this same historic soil makes the experience unforgettable.
