1887 prison turned museum — Sabahattin Ali, Refik Halit and Refi Cevad all wrote books inside these stone cells.
Editor's Note
Sinop Fortress Prison was a state prison inside the Sinop Fortress, sometimes called 'the Anatolian Alcatraz.' One of Turkey's oldest prisons, it was established in 1887 within the inner fortress of the centuries-old fortification and was known for being impossible to escape due to its location and high security. The prison was closed in 1997 (with inmates moved to a new modern prison) and turned into a museum in 2000, with restoration begun in 2020.
