Editor's Note
With over a million artefacts from various cultures, the Istanbul Archaeology Museums rank among the largest museums in the world and occupy the oldest building in Turkey purpose-built as a museum. It was founded in 1869 as the Müze-i Hümâyûn (Imperial Museum) by Education Minister Mehmed Esad Safvet Pasha, and the main building was completed and opened to visitors on 13 June 1891.
