14th-century mosaics and frescoes — the last great flowering of Byzantine wall painting before the city fell.
Editor's Note
The Chora Church, or Kariye Mosque, is a Byzantine building in the Edirnekapı neighbourhood of Istanbul's Fatih district, near the Theodosian Walls. Once the core of the Chora Monastery in the Eastern Roman era, it was converted into a mosque in the 16th century, declared a national monument in 1945 and made a museum in 1948. Famous worldwide for its outstanding Late Byzantine mosaics and frescoes, it was reopened for worship in 2024.
