Editor's Note
The Battle of Manzikert was fought on 26 August 1071 near Manzikert (modern Malazgirt) between the Seljuk ruler Alp Arslan and the Byzantine emperor Romanos IV Diogenes. Alp Arslan's decisive victory is known as the battle that opened the gates of Anatolia to the Turks, after which many Turks began settling there. It was the first time a Byzantine emperor was taken prisoner by a Muslim commander.
