Editor's Note
The Battle of the Sakarya was fought from 23 August to 13 September 1921 along the Sakarya River near Polatlı, today a district of Ankara, and is regarded as the turning point of the Turkish War of Independence. Owing to the unusually high casualty rate among officers it is also called the 'Officers' Battle', and Mustafa Kemal Atatürk likened it to Armageddon.
