Editor's Note
The Column of Arcadius was a Roman triumphal column erected in the early 5th century in the Forum of Arcadius in the Fatih district of Istanbul (Constantinople). Known in Turkish as 'Avrat Taşı,' the marble column had a spiralling frieze of reliefs on its shaft and supported a colossal statue of the emperor, which fell in 740. The monument, whose summit was reached by an internal spiral staircase, was destroyed in the 1719 earthquake; only its massive masonry base survives.
