Story
Standing on the seafront in Konak, the Ancient Theater of Smyrna is an important monument reflecting the cultural life of İzmir during the ancient Smyrna period. Built in the Hellenistic period, this theater was designed with a capacity of roughly 20,000 spectators, its cavea of marble tiers forming a magnificent structure that looks out over the Aegean Sea. From the dramatic plays staged here to religious rituals, the city's important social events took place in this theater, which was also restored in the Roman period and continued to endure. The architectural achievement of the structure and its setting in harmony with nature reflect to this day the mastery of ancient Anatolian architecture. Visiting especially at sunset, you can experience the harmony of history and nature in the sunlight cast over the Aegean.
