Editor's Note
Niksar Castle stands in the historic centre of the Niksar district of Tokat. It is known to have been built originally under the Pontic Kingdom, when it was called Kaberia, and took its present form with additions made in the Roman period. It has three lines of walls (inner, outer and middle) and was strengthened in the 7th-9th centuries against raids from the south. Within the castle are the remains of two baths, two small mosques, a medrese, a church and a prison.
