Hidden in Etimesgut, the Tonyukuk-1 Inscription is an important monument documenting the brilliant era of the Kokturk State in the eighth century. Skillfully engraved on a flat rock, this inscription tells of the life, services, and achievements of the statesman named Tonyukuk. The ancient Turkic script used in the inscription, together with the Orhun Inscriptions, forms Turkey's oldest written sources. Offering valuable information about the political, military, and social life of the period, this inscription allows us to understand the deep history of Turkish civilization. The mention in the inscription that Tonyukuk established relations both with China and with the peoples of the eastern steppes reveals the international politics of the era. Visitors coming to Ankara can gain a close acquaintance with the imprint of a Turkish civilization from thousands of years ago by seeing this historic document in Etimesgut.
