Located in the Etimesgut district of Ankara, the Tonyukuk-2 Inscription is among the most valuable documents of Turkish history and culture. This stone block, which commemorates Tonyukuk, the legendary commander of the eighth century, has become almost a speaking history book thanks to the texts engraved in the Old Turkic script. The ruler of this period, at the height of the Gokturk Empire, achieved great successes both on the battlefield and in international negotiations. The inscription documents not only Tonyukuk's biography but also the state organization, military strategies, and East-West relations of that age. The legacy of this figure, who entered history as the most trusted man of Emperor Bilge Khagan, has been turned into a tangible presence on Anatolian soil. The geometric patterns and the stance of the inscription reflect the aesthetic sensibilities of that period. While visiting here, it is thrilling to see how Central Asian nomadic civilization arrived at such a sophisticated state structure. If you come in the morning hours, the play of light illuminates the inscriptions in the most beautiful way.
