Editor's Note
Adile Sultan Palace was built in 1856 by the architect Sarkis Balyan as a gift from Sultan Abdülmecid to his sister, the Ottoman princess Adile Sultan. From 1916 it served as the Kandilli high school for girls before being badly damaged by fire in 1986. Restored with the support of the Sabancı family, it reopened in 2007 and today functions as a cultural center in the Kandilli neighborhood of Istanbul.
