Editor's Note

It is the first modern educational institution opened in a building constructed in accordance with the European school plan. In its final period the Ottoman Empire sought to create a modern educational institution by taking Europe as its model, just as it did in the fields of economy and technology, and this idea was first attempted during the reign of Mahmud II. Unable to be realized in Mahmud II's time, this project was carried out through the efforts of Bezm-i Âlem Valide Sultan, the mother of Sultan Abdülmecid, who undertook many charitable works such as the Vakf-ı Gureba and the Bezm-i Âlem Mosque.
