Carved into the vertical cliffs beside the Yesilirmak River in Amasya, these ancient tombs are important monuments of the Pontic Kingdom period (1st century AD). Characteristic examples of Hellenistic-Roman architecture, the structures are quite striking with their door frames hewn from dark stone and their decorative details. The chambers inside the rock tombs reflect the belief system and social structure of the era. Located in what can be considered the heart of the city, these tombs are made special by the harmonious view they form together with the Kizil Kule (Red Tower) above. Through these monuments we learn that the city, known as Amaseia in antiquity, was one of the most important centers of Pontus. While visiting, it is fascinating to examine the historical carvings on the rock face alongside the natural beauty offered by the Yesilirmak.
