Editor's Note

Of the three coats of arms above the inscription here, the leftmost is the Genoese cross. The middle one cannot be identified because it has been chiselled away, while the last belongs to the De Marini family. The inscription reads: "In praise of Christ, Podestà Stefano De Marini built these walls in 1435." In the Middle Ages, Podestà was the title given to the highest civil governor or mayor, especially in the city-states of northern and central Italy.
