Ağakapısı

Editor's Note

This place, where the Janissary Agha - one of the highest officials of the state - carried out his duties, came to be known simply as the Ağakapısı. The Ağakapısı stood north of the Süleymaniye Mosque, where the present-day Istanbul Mufti's Office building and a unit of Istanbul University now stand. While one barracks of the Janissaries (the Old Barracks) was in Şehzadebaşı and another in Yenibahçe between Fatih and Çapa (the New Barracks), the Janissary Agha resided here, in a spot commanding the city and the Golden Horn.
