Editor's Note
The cistern noted by Forchheimer and Strzygowski was encountered in 1978 during a PTT excavation on Mıhçılar Avenue. The structure, located on At Pazarı Square—the Sığır Pazarı (Cattle Market) in the Byzantine period—is thought to be the substructure of a church later converted into a cistern. The body walls of the cistern are coated with waterproof plaster. After being studied, its entrances were sealed and it was left beneath Mıhçılar Avenue; today no trace of it survives above ground. 1
