Editor's Note
Also known as Muallakkemer, an aqueduct built over the Alibey stream valley in Istanbul between 1555 and 1562 by the architect Mimar Sinan on the orders of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent. The two-story structure, 35 meters high and 257 meters long, is regarded as a masterpiece of world hydraulic architecture; damaged by a flood in 1563 but repaired the same year, it continues to carry water to Istanbul.
