The Battle of the Granicus, fought in May 334 BC, was the first of three major battles between Alexander the Great and the Persian Achaemenid Empire. It took place at the crossing of the Granicus (today the Biga River) in the Troad region of Çanakkale, where Alexander defeated the field army of the Persian satraps of Asia Minor, forcing the Persians onto the defensive in the region.
