Editor's Note
The Agios Sabbas Rock Chapel is notable for its frescoes, dated to between the late 13th and early 15th centuries. Carved into a large rock mass 7 meters high and 12 meters wide, the structure shares features with the rock-cut chapels of the Cappadocia region. Entirely hewn from the rock, this place of worship was converted from caves that had served various functions in earlier times, and some researchers suggest it was first used as Mithraic tombs. The structure is closely associated with the monastic tradition of the Early Christian period.
