The Bartın City Museum sits at the heartbeat of the city as an important center of memory that holds the rich cultural memory of the Black Sea region. In the museum, designed under the guidance of the Turkish architect Sedat Hakkı Eldem, the handicraft examples filling the display cases, period furniture, and ethnographic objects take visitors on a journey stretching from the Ottoman era to the Republic. While customs documents demonstrating Bartın's commercial importance, tradesmen's guild archives, and the works of local craftsmen are on display, the regional knitting techniques known as the Black Sea version of women's weaving also draw attention. The museum brings a multilayered past to light with the mother-of-pearl work and handwritten copies of the Quran it gathered from 19th-century Ottoman houses. During your visit, don't overlook the collection of wooden chests and gravestones in the museum garden; this stonework keeps the skill of the region's artists alive centuries later.
