Editor's Note
The prevailing view is that the building, constructed in the 13th century during the Seljuk period, was originally a 'han' (caravanserai) rather than a 'mosque.' This view arose because the architectural plan corresponds more closely to Seljuk caravanserai plans. The Han Mosque is notable for an interior dominated by a domeless central vault with six windows. The Kayseri Han Mosque was initially built as a caravanserai on a classic Seljuk plan. As one of the rare caravanserais inside the city, it served to lodge merchants who came for trade. Over time needs changed and the building became a mosque, that is, a place of worship.
