Story
The Camondo Stairs, one of the most magnificent works of urban art in Beyoğlu, were commissioned in the Istanbul of the 1860s by the Levantine merchant Camondo family. These stone stairs climbing to the top of Galata were designed both as a functional passageway and as a symbol of architectural elegance. With their arched openings and harmonious structure, they reflect a perfect synthesis of Ottoman and European architecture. Built of yellow stone, the stairs carry the memory of the city with every step, even though they have been cleared of the dust and debris descending from past centuries. Nearby are the Santral İstanbul cultural center and the narrow streets of historic Galata. The legacy that the Camondo family gifted to Beyoğlu through this structure is today an essential visiting point for lovers of art and design. The best photographs are taken under the morning sun, looking upward from the lower steps; in that moment, the rooftops of Galata and the blue of the Golden Horn form a magnificent backdrop behind the stairs.
