Editor's Note
Created with the help of the Rockefeller Foundation, this institution was, with its modern equipment, one of the important early initiatives in the field of health services. When it began in 1928, it consisted of four departments—chemistry, bacteriology, immunobiology and pharmacodynamics—and had a limited number of staff. The first to be built, the bacteriology-chemistry (vaccine production) building designed by Theodor Jost, together with the later School of Hygiene designed by Robert Oerley and the T-shaped Central building (serum institute), were arranged around three sides of a large central courtyard.
