Editor's Note
It was built between 1490 and 1508 by Bayezid II to provide income for his mosque and soup kitchen in Istanbul. Its architects were Yakup Şah, son of Sultan Şah, and Ali, son of Abdullah. In the 1855 earthquake the upper floor of the han in particular was damaged, and over time various additional structures were built to make usable the ruined parts of the courtyard and interior. In addition, its northeast corner was cut off in 1903–1906 when Hamidiye Avenue was opened. The two rows of vaulted shops extending to the east of the han burned in 1519 and were later repaired.
