Standing as a silent witness on the shores of Ünye, the Ayanikola Church bears the traces of Byzantine religious architecture. Taking its name from the Greek 'Agios Nikolaos,' the building was constructed at the heart of Black Sea trade, in an era when the cult of Saint Nicholas was widespread. Built in the style of its period with stone and plaster, it creates a mystical atmosphere with its heavenward-reaching vaults and simple geometric design. Though worn over the centuries by the waves of climate and history, the carved crosses and traces of mosaic remaining on its walls still speak of the refinement of Byzantine art. According to local belief, prayers offered to Saint Nicholas brought success particularly in maritime trade. As you explore Ünye's cultural fabric, before visiting this church please contact the Ünye Museum to arrange a guide; you can learn the building's location and access conditions there.
