Editor's Note
Although the Ali Cafer Mausoleum bears no inscription, in his work Monuments of Kayseri, Albert Gabriel argues from its architectural features, and particularly the style of its entrance portal, that the building may have been erected in the mid-14th century. This period corresponds to the years when the Eratna Beylik held sway in Anatolia. Indeed, the mausoleum was built for Cafer Bey, a Mongol emir of Uyghur origin, and his brother Ali Bey. During the era of the Mongol Ilkhanate, founded by Genghis Khan's grandson Hülagü, the governor-general of Anatolia was Çobanoğlu Timurtaş (Temürtaş).
