Editor's Note
Built in 1363, the Ilyas Bey Mosque is the oldest inscribed building in Manisa from the Beyliks period. According to the three-line marble inscription set between the two arches on the outer side of the portico, it was commissioned by Haci Ilyas b. Mehmed in early Jumada al-Awwal AH 764 (mid-February 1363). The prayer hall has a square plan measuring 7.05 x 7.05 m. This section is covered by a dome on a high drum, with squinches providing the transition to the dome. The mihrab takes the form of a simple niche.
