Editor's Note
Located within the Kayseri–Niğde–Nevşehir triangle, the village of Soğanlı lies 15 km from the centre of the Yeşilhisar district, in a valley where rock churches and caves are intertwined with present-day houses. The Soğanlı archaeological site began to be used as a settlement from the Roman period onward. The rock-cut spaces on the valley slopes were used by the Romans as a cemetery and by the Byzantines as churches. From the 4th century AD, Soğanlı became one of the centres of Christianity in Cappadocia and maintained its importance through the 7th and 8th centuries.
