This is the ancient quarry from which the stones used in building the ancient city of Sardis were obtained. In this area, the source of the marble blocks for vast structures such as the Temple of Artemis, the cutting marks, stepped rock faces and unfinished blocks that reflect ancient stoneworking can be clearly seen. Lying within the hinterland of Sardis, the quarry is a cultural asset worthy of protection for understanding ancient mining and construction technology.
