The Konya Inner Castle stands on the mound known as Alâeddin Hill. Conforming to the shape of the mound and having an oval plan that widens to the southwest and southeast, the inner castle is 330 meters from east to west and 450 meters from north to south, covering an area of roughly 94,200 square meters. In excavations conducted by R. O. Arık on Alâeddin Hill in 1941, two rows of wall remains, probably from different periods, were found around the inner castle; these findings showed that the castle's history reaches back as far as 2000 BC.
