Myra Castle is a silent witness to the ruins of ancient structures rising in the mountainous region of Demre. One of the most important examples of Lycia's powerful defensive architecture, this archaeological site has clung to the rocky hilltops for over a thousand years. Its stone walls, in places more than three meters thick, have resisted the attacks that continued through the ages. Coins, ceramics, and written documents found in excavations by archaeologists shed light on the daily life of the people who lived at the foot of the castle. Especially strengthened during the Byzantine period, the castle became an important defensive point for the region against sea pirates. Visiting tip: if you set out early in the morning, as you explore the ancient stone pavements you will also watch the turquoise waters of the Mediterranean glitter across the Demre valley.
