Editor's Note
The Magnaura (Greek: Μαγναύρα; probably from the Latin Magna Aula, "Great Hall") was a large building in Constantinople. It stood to the east of the Augustaion ceremonial square south of Hagia Sophia, where the Chalke Gate opened as the main entrance to the Great Palace. Built as a three-aisled basilica, it served in turn as a throne room and reception hall, and in 849 Caesar Bardas founded a school within it.
