Story
Perched atop the Princes' Islands, the Cemal Bey House is a fine example of the refined architecture of the Ottoman era. Built in the 19th century, this historic mansion stands out with its stone foundation, timber upper floors, and wide balconies overlooking the cool breezes of the Sea of Marmara. From every corner of the house you can see the rippling waters of the Bosphorus and the Istanbul skyline. Cemal Bey was a statesman who played an important role on the island in his day, and this house is a witness to his social and political life. The original woodwork preserved inside, along with its period décor, are fine examples of the skill of Ottoman master craftsmen. Islanders say that in Cemal Bey's time the inscribed ancient stones in the garden were remnants of a very old harbor structure. The Princes' Islands are easy to reach; leave the noise of Istanbul behind and step into the world of this historic mansion. Combined with the natural beauty of its surroundings, it carries visitors back to the past and into the very spirit of Istanbul.
