Story
The Şekerci Fountain is a blessed structure that has kept giving life-giving water for centuries in the old city center regarded as the beating heart of Çeşme. Dating from the late Ottoman period, this fountain represents a perfect example of the art of stonemasonry and of water architecture. Taking its name from the confectioners' shops around it, this historic structure became, over the years, a center of the town's social life. The inscriptions on the fountain, finely worked in white and grey marble, reflect the elegance of Turkish calligraphy. Showing just how advanced the water management system of the era was, this fountain has today become a symbol of Çeşme's heritage and identity. Sitting in the old fountain square and watching the fountain while imagining life in past centuries is an experience that visitors to Çeşme cannot do without.
