Standing quietly in Erzurum's Yakutiye district, the Kumbet Fountain is a bearer of the memory of the Ottoman period. Reflecting the refinement of stonework, the structure took on an important role in meeting the city's need for water over the centuries. Viewed in terms of its rectangular plan and domed design, the characteristic features of Ottoman architecture stand out. While the word 'kumbet' in its name points to the structure's geometric form, the fountain's close relationship with the public shows its contribution to social history. In the Ottoman Empire, water law and public welfare were two fundamental principles, and charitable fountains are concrete examples of this understanding. Today, located in Yakutiye's old neighborhoods, this monument tells of the way of life of past generations. Together with the old residences settled around the fountain, it offers a cross-section of Erzurum's cultural richness. When you visit Yakutiye, passing through the narrow streets you can find this historic fountain and witness the human-centered design philosophy of Ottoman architecture.
