Located in Trabzon's historic center, in the upper neighborhoods of the Ortahisar district, the Manastir (Monastery) Fountain is a hidden witness to the water culture of Ottoman-era architecture. With ornamentation worked into its stones and a stepped pool design, this monument, dating to the mid-16th century, played a central role in the social and religious life of the nearby monastery buildings; it was a place of spiritual refreshment and ablution for the people and the dervishes. The fountain's water channels, through stone conduits still partly visible, carried clear water brought down from the mountains to the city center; this multilayered system is a continuation of Trabzon's medieval water-architecture tradition. Bearing traces of local construction and craftsmanship, its capital and roof reflect the mastery of the region's stone-working artisans. An interesting fact: the inscriptions near the fountain contain prayer texts about the abundance and bounty of water, regarding the water source as a sacred heritage. On the road by the Ortahisar cemetery, in the morning hours there is a chance to see the period's architecture and its surrounding design in full.
