Editor's Note
The Sublime Porte (Babıali) was the name given to the palace of the Grand Vizier during the Ottoman Empire, and came to be used as a metonymy for the central Ottoman government in Istanbul. Until the late 18th century the Grand Vizier's residence was also known as the Pasha's Palace, the Pasha's Gate and Bâb-ı Âsafî; it began to be called Bâb-ı Âlî from the reign of Abdülhamid I. The building housed the offices of the Grand Vizier and key ministries, and today serves as the seat of the Istanbul governorate.
