Home to the unique marine life of the Black Sea, the Trabzon Aquarium in Ortahisar presents the maritime heritage of the historic port city of Trabzon through a modern lens. A contemporary expression of a commercial seafaring tradition that began in the Ottoman era and continued after the founding of the Republic, this venue reveals the endemic fish species, colorful corals, and sea creatures that live in the Black Sea's crystal waters. Among the species on display are the same fish, such as salmon, sea bass, and sea bream, that Venetian merchants once witnessed while trading here centuries ago. An interesting detail: Trabzon was the city of Trapezus, founded by Greek colonists in antiquity, and it has continued to function as a port city ever since. During your visit, you are also encouraged to look at the educational panels designed to help you understand the Black Sea's fragile ecosystem and raise awareness of its conservation. At sunset, the ocean view set against the mountains from the nearby quayside brings together the beauty of history and nature.
